Fernet is a bitter liqueur, a form of Amaro, initially produced in Italy from the distillate of macerated herbs and spices. Today, the popular brand Fernet-Branca has become almost synonymous with the category although Fernets a produced by a number of other spirits companies. The drink is widely popular in Argentina where it is often drunk mixed with Cola.
The drink is produced by macerating a range of herbs and spices in neutral grape spirit. Luxardo Fernet, for instance, contains licorice, cardamom, gentian and saffron while Fernet-Branca includes the likes of aloe, rhubarb, gentian, galingale, cinnamon, myrrh, iris, and chamomile.
